Coltsfoot and Crocuses on a Green Roof – Lewisham

Spring is here and it is about a year ago that two small green roofs were installed in the Recycling Yard of the London Borough of Lewisham. Since then the roofs have developed and been planted with additional flowers.  Last summer the living roofs were awash with annuals and the native herbs that were planted. Now that the green roof has hit its first Spring, the crocuses and coltsfoot are in bloom after a long, hard cold, winter.[nggallery id=7]

The green roofs were constructed oon top of two freight containers and on the roof of the neighbouring generator shed. The green roofs were designed and constructed following the principles outlined in the DIY e-guide, written by John Little and Dusty Gedge. The bulbs that were planted about a month ago are offering early emerging queen bumblebees an important food source, as are the yellow flowerheads of the coltsfoot. Soon May will be  here and the roofs flowers will continue to provide a forage habitat for bees and habitat for other invertebrates right in the heart of Lewisham throughout the summer.
