Green roof plant of the week – Hare’s Foot Clover

A delicate pinky grey flower is one of our favourites. Although Hare’s Foot Clover (Trifolium  arvense) is a slightly unassuming flower amongst the showier wildflowers  it is very drought and wind tolerant. And it can grow in relatively shallow green roof substrates.

It’s seed is quite difficult to get hold of commercially – there are suppliers though. We have collected ours from local brownfield sites and then seeded some of our roofs. Then we collect the seeds from the roofs and add to new roofs.

Dusty also saw it flowering in Washington DC, on the roof of ASLA. What was interesting was that the plant  on the otherside of the Atlantic was much whiter. Probably an adaptation to the hot sun that beats down on DC during the summer time.

On roofs in the UK it is generally in bloom between late May to mid July. A great green roof plant. Subtle and worth establishing.
