Green roof plant of the week – Selfheal

Selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) is a delightful plant. It tends to grow quite short on green roofs, and brown roofs that have been designed for biodiversity. Some sedum blanket growers also include it in their products in seed form.

Green Roof Plant of the Week – the Cowslip

Cowslips (Primula veris) have clusters of yellow, nodding flowers, borne on tall stems. They can be seen on green roofs from mid march. In London, probably due to the Urban Heat Island, they have been seen to flower in early March

Green roof plant of the week – Small Scabious

The small scabious (Scabiosa columbaria), with it’s delightful pin cushion flower head, is a perennial of chalk and limestone grassland. It is a mass of lilac-blue flowers, in round heads on long stalks. Being of a dry and sunny disposition it is an ideal plant for extensive, green roofs and brown roofs.

Green roof plant of the week – Viper’s bugloss

If you want bees to home in your green roof, there are many flowers that will attract them. However the star plant and therefore the star attraction has to be Viper’s bugloss (Echium vulgaris).
