Selfheal (Prunella vulgaris) is a delightful plant. It tends to grow quite short on green roofs, and those that are designed for biodiversity. Some sedum blanket growers also include it in their products in seed form.It’s violet flowers are attractive t a wide range of bees and other pollinators.Butterflies and moths also feed off it’s nectar. It flowers at ground level right up until October. However on roofs it is generally in the flower from late May until mid August, due to lack of moisture.Although it is often quite short in stature on a green roof it’s vibrant violet colour it makes it relatively visible on well designed and constructed green roofs.Selfheal was widely used in herbal medicine – it helps stem bleeding and has been research for it’s potential properties as an anti-viral agent.

It comes in seed form in many of the native green roof mixes and can also be planted into the green roof at the outset.
