Green roof plant of the week – Thrift (Armeria maritima)

Thrift is a coastal plant thriving on cliff and cliff tops. Thriving in such stressed conditions makes it ideally suited to green roofs.
It is spectacular plant  and it is worth planting plugs of the species in groups of ten or more to give a good carpet effect on the green roof.

The plant is very attractive to bees and other pollinators. Potentially if near the coast, thrift on a green roof could attract the thrift clearwing moth.
The flowers of thrift are generally pink, though they can also be white in colour. The narrow narrow leaves can create a cushion effect, which provides good ground cover for a range of ground and rove beetles.cushion. The flowers sits about 50mm above the ground.

An excellent plant to grow on a green roof, it can grow in depths of 100mm and over. Another positive is the fact that it can flower anytime between April and September thus providing a late nectar source for bees and other pollinators, when most green roofs plants have ceased to do
