Green roof plant of the week – Maiden Pink

Dianthus species are common wildflowers on green roofs on the continent. Maiden Pink (Dianthus deltoides) is a widespread UK native wild pink and is an ideal wildflower for green roofs.[singlepic id=83 w=320 h=240 float=]

It’s pink carnation like flowers provide an attractive addition. Furthermore the plant forms a mat with its leaves, thus providing good coverage on a green roof.
Maiden pink are found on dry, sandy soils in the wider landscape but can grown in brick based green roof substrates. The flower heads are attractive to a wide range of bees, butterflies and moths.
Maiden Pinks generally flower between June and September but have been seen flowering as early as March on green roofs in South East England.
