On 23rd October we will be running a green roof training course at the Wat Tyler Centre, Pitsea, Essex.

The Wat Tyler Centre has a green roof designed for biodiversity. This was designed by Dusty Gedge, John Little and Dr. G. Kadas, and is therefore an ideal location for a small scale green roof workshop. The workshop provides both technical and practical help for anyone interested in building there own green roofs on sheds, outhouses, extensions. It is also relevant for roof, buiilding and landscape contractors. The courses also attract garden designers.

The course leaders are John Little who has built over 50 green roofs in the South Essex area over the last 15 years and Dusty Gedge, who is an recognised authority on green roofs in the UK.

The course will run 09.30 -17.00

The cost of the course is £80.

On the 5th September 2010, a mate and I went to one of these courses, delivered at Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s place at Wolseley Bridge centre. It was a very successful day, with a straightforward practical bias at the start making sure that any project we attempt will at least have the roofing base correctly and securely fitted, avoiding any risk of later leaks. We also covered aspects of strengthening and support that might be appropriate for your own project.
There was wide discussion about roof substrates, design and planting, with links to the various sites associated with the subject so that more reading could be done.
Large scale green roofing was demonstrated, and is rather more widespread than you might expect.
I left with a very clear idea of how to prepare a small scale green roof for myself.
Dusty and John are entertaining speakers – try it, you’ll like it.
